Anchorage Fishing
Do you like to fish?
Are bush flights or excursions out of the question because of your age or health conditions, or even, because you have limited finances? Don’t worry – you can catch all the fish you can eat right in Anchorage!
That’s right! You can catch 50 to 60 pound King Salmon, Dolly Varden, silver salmon, Arctic graying and trophy worthy rainbow trout, that people in other states would have mounted – right here in Anchorage Alaska. And, you will find a much larger variety within a short distance from downtown Anchorage.
Anchorage has a fantastic greenbelt and if you see water – there’s probably fish. Ship Creek has lots of salmon during the summer fishing season. You will find good trout fishing in Chester Creek and Campbell Creek is famous for its rainbow trout, salmon and Dolly Varden. Many lakes have Arctic grayling, lake trout, landlocked salmon and Arctic char. Other good spots include Jewel Lake, Delong Lake and Mirror Lake.
While you are shopping for fishing gear at any one of the numerous sporting goods stores you should ask questions about fishing in Anchorage and the surrounding area. You should also ask them about the fishing license required. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game can answer most of your questions but you will need to purchase your fishing license at a sporting goods store.
Always be aware of your surrounding and activity around you. Bears like fish too and they sometimes wander into the city limits and may be fishing in the same stream that you are.
Please remember the rules: clean up your fish waste and any trash that you take with you needs to be packed back out.
